Halliburton in Duncan, Oklahoma, with a business focused primarily on cementing oil wells. Oil-well cementing was at the heart of Halliburton’s earliest work. In 1920, Erle Halliburton used a cementing technique to help bring a gas well under control near Wilson, Oklahoma. The following year, the company received a patent covering a method for preventing water from entering oil wells.
New equipment and improved cementing techniques helped the business grow during the early years. The oil boom in Mexia, Texas, provided another opportunity for expansion, and Halliburton had completed its 500th well by the latter part of 1922.
International business soon followed. In 1926, Halliburton began selling equipment in Burma and India. This early move outside the United States laid the groundwork for a much broader international network.
The company also became involved in offshore operations. In 1938, a Halliburton crew carried out cementing work on an offshore well from a barge positioned off the Louisiana coast. Several years later, the company placed a marine cementing vessel into service, strengthening its ability to support offshore oil operations.
Building an International Network
Halliburton’s international footprint grew substantially during the 1940s and 1950s. Operations were established in countries across the Americas, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. The company opened offices or created subsidiaries in locations such as Venezuela, Italy, Germany, Argentina, England, Canada, Peru, Colombia, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia.
By 1952, annual revenue had passed the $100 million mark. The company continued developing its oilfield technology and expanding its range of services following the death of founder Erle P. Halliburton in 1957.
Another notable milestone came in 1961. On July 5 of that year, the company changed its official name to Halliburton Company. From that point onward, the organization continued adding services connected with drilling, production, evaluation, and other stages of oil and gas operations.
Business Areas and Corporate Changes
Halliburton now operates across several parts of the energy-services market. Its activities include oilfield services, formation evaluation, fluid systems, production-related solutions, and digital and consulting services.
Corporate acquisitions have also influenced the company’s development. The purchase of Dresser Industries in 1998 brought additional businesses into the organization and played a role in the creation of Kellogg Brown & Root, commonly known as KBR. After several years as part of the broader corporate structure, KBR became a separately listed company in 2007.
Leadership and Continuing Development
Jeff Miller joined the company’s senior leadership as president in 2014 and became chief executive officer in 2017, taking over from Dave Lesar. Halliburton has continued to develop technologies and services intended to support energy companies throughout different stages of exploration and production.
The company’s history has not been without controversy. Various periods have involved public discussion and legal or regulatory scrutiny relating to subjects such as the Iraq War, the Deepwater Horizon disaster, environmental matters, and allegations involving workplace or whistleblower issues.
